A place for everyday ideas, shared lightly.
What remains, and what is left open, is met with attention.

Lunch has been simple lately.
A boiled egg and a banana.

Something about the egg draws the eye.
Its surface, its shadows.
Almost without thinking, it ends up in a photograph.

Stone and camellia.
A faint sweetness comes to rest.

No ornament, no excess.
Instruments hold only what is needed, guided by hand.

Perfection glows. Then disappears.
What stays is quieter.
A shape, slightly unusual.
A feeling, not easy to name.

It is there that beauty rests.
Not obvious. Not loud.
But lasting.

I went to the local shrine to draw a fortune slip,
only to realize I had no hundred-yen coin.
With little choice, I pressed the intercom at the shrine office.

A voice replied, detached yet embracing:
“That can wait until your next visit.”

It struck me then that the deities of the Kojiki,
Japan’s ancient chronicles, were just like this;
uncontrived, carefree, and deeply in tune with reality.

And somehow, it all fell into place.

When restlessness sets in, the hand reaches for the phone, and minutes dissolve in empty scrolling.

In moments like these, I turn my gaze to the quiet mystery of forms untouched by human hands.

When the season shifts, and the air gathers differently along the shop-lined street, the line between here and elsewhere softens quietly, almost imperceptibly.

The kataoka Tokyo Flagship Store stands in a former factory, built in 1932. For nearly a century, this building has quietly witnessed the passing of time.

Its walls have held many lives, many stories, most of them now fading. My desire is to honor what remains. To preserve, even in a small way, the presence this place has carried through the years.

My son’s milk tooth, once lost and long forgotten, found again in a quiet moment.

Carved into pearl, not just to remember, but to search for something I hadn’t yet understood. A trace of childhood, a glimmer of the mystery that still lingers.

Certain places carry a quiet magnetism—an unseen thread that tugs at the soul and lends a fleeting spark to everything that stirs there. Over the past four years, the land and space cradling the atelier have blossomed into just such a spot.

Now, it seems ready to turn the page and begin a new, tender chapter.

The drills used daily wear out quickly.
Not only do they lose their sharpness fast, but they also break rather easily, requiring frequent resharpening like a pencil.
However, the tool I’m currently testing makes it much easier to achieve the perfect angle— a small but satisfying joy as of late.

In the quiet of morning, inspiration stirs—soft, fleeting.

So often it fades before we notice, but today, it lingers.

Walking through the neighborhood at dawn, I find clarity.

When I dipped my feet into the cold waters of Higashikawa, memories of my childhood in Hokkaido came rushing back. Even on the hottest days, there were always pockets of coolness, delicate and refreshing. I remember feeling that these gentle summers were somehow lacking in intensity.

Yet, as I stood there, I was reminded that these memories, though subtle and fleeting, still linger—interwoven with nature, evoking a comforting sense of nostalgia.

This year, once again, it’s time to dance with my wife to “Suki ni Natta Hito” by Harumi Miyako.

Each year, this beloved song brings us back to cherished moments. Dancing to this classic at the Japanese festival with her, we relive the joy of our shared memories and the tradition we love so much.

I witnessed the moment the sacred boundary was drawn, in the space between this world and the other, through a solemn dance.

Opportunities often arrive unannounced, at moments when the stars seem misaligned and circumstances are far from ideal. It's as though fate delights in testing our resolve, presenting us with choices when the timing feels most inconvenient.

Yet, within these chaotic intersections lies the potential for transformation and growth.

No matter the pursuit, as one's skill improves, the initial rawness begins to fade—yet there is an ideal in retaining a sense of the amateur, a rawness that is appealing. There's something truly ideal about becoming skilled while still seeming a bit like a novice.

Monday mornings bring a flurry of engravings, each a mix of humor and poetry, sparking admiration and chuckles. These moments turn thoughts into tangible, engraved treasures.

Engraving transforms words into lasting keepsakes, creating personal symbols rich with stories and meaning for both giver and receiver.

The Goldberg Variations, as interpreted by Nicolas Angelich, transcends mere musical performance, entering a realm where each note and silence speaks directly to the soul. This rendition captures not just the technical mastery required for Bach's iconic work but imbues it with a personal touch that makes each variation an intimate conversation.

While animals are the primary attraction, the canvas comes alive with a multitude of visiting families. Monthly Zoom meetings often yield to the allure of morning light, capturing snapshots of spontaneity. Contrary to the stern guise often associated with leadership, our president embodies a softer, contemplative essence. In the midst of the bustling weekend, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT became a haven for stylish couples and fashion-forward individuals. Among them, a solitary young craftsman in workwear pants emerged as a distinct figure. He moved with an aura of dedicated professionalism that was hard to miss, his role announced by a circular blue sticker he wore with pride. Captured in the rhythm of his perusal, his earnest scrutiny of the exhibits radiated a magnetic charm that was incredibly captivating.

There was something uniquely attractive about this craftsman. It wasn't just his distinctive attire or the focus he held, but the passionate curiosity for design he exuded that seemed to infuse the air with an exhilarating sense of admiration. In his presence, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT felt even more alive, offering a testament to its mission of celebrating design in all its forms and participants.

Opened in 2007, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a museum situated in Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan. It was the collaborative creation of Tadao Ando, a globally acclaimed architect, and Issey Miyake, a famous fashion designer.

At kataoka, the delicate, thread-like rings that epitomize our designs come to life through the enchanting touch of milgrain. I envisioned jewelry as an expression of beauty not confined to flat surfaces, but brought to fruition through the intricacy of lines.

Influenced profoundly by my mother's treasured ceramics collection, I believe milgrain serves as one of the wellsprings of our creations, imprinted on my heart since childhood. Like the soft strokes of a brush, milgrain adds an air of elegance to our pieces, guiding our hands to craft distinct and timeless creations. Each line holds a tale of craftsmanship, passion, and the delicate allure within our jewelry.
