Visual Lead

Tokyo, Japan  ·  Full-time

What you will do

In this role, you will own end to end the full visual output of kataoka across both photography and video, optimized for both mobile and desktop. You are expected to capture macro and detail work communicating craft techniques, stone color, alloy finish, and surface texture with precision. This includes:

  • Shoot still photography of creations across collections
    • Grey background
    • Natural light
    • Worn on models
  • Produce video content for branding use
    • Short-form: direct models wearing kataoka creations to convey scale, movement, and presence as wearable art
    • Longer-form: documentary content capturing the atelier, the craft, and the goldsmith behind it
  • Manage your own retouching and editing pipeline to deliver on schedule
  • Maintain a consistent visual archive of all pieces, including in-progress and archival documentation
  • Collaborate cross-functionally across teams to support broader brand projects. This includes working with:
    • The atelier to ensure the seamless transfer of assets
    • The IT department on releasing visuals to the website
    • Marketing to coordinate campaigns and content planning
    • Client advisors when customers request additional visuals
  • Take ownership of the studio space and all equipment, ensuring everything is maintained, organized, and ready at all times

What we are looking for

  • A portfolio demonstrating mastery of fine jewelry, luxury objects, or high-craft still life.
  • Command of natural light and an intuitive understanding of how it interacts with metal, stone, and skin.
  • In-house retouching capability at a high standard, with proficiency in Adobe Suite.
  • Experience with macro work and an understanding of how gemstone color behaves under different light sources.
  • Video production skills, including shooting and editing; experience in luxury or editorial contexts preferred.
  • Japanese fluency preferred; working English is an asset.
  • The temperament to work in a small, founder-led atelier — self-directed, precise, comfortable with iteration.

What does not fit this role

  • Primary background in portrait, event, or lifestyle content.
  • Reliance on large teams or extensive production infrastructure.
  • A signature style applied to the work rather than drawn from it.
